  • Obtained two ZEUS robotic systems and three AESOP systems
  • One ZEUS in the OR at CHM and one for the lab

November 2001
  • Drs. Langenburg and Klein complete hands on training
  • Robotic Fellow from Hungary, Attila Lorincz,joins Frankel CARES team
January 2002
  • Kelly Gidell RN, joins Frankel CARES team as coordinator
  • First U .S. pediatric robotically assisted procedure by Drs. Langenburg and Klein at CHM
February 2002
  • Dr. Waiters, cardiovascular surgery, begins working in lab with robotic assistance on pig hearts
March 2002
  • Press conference from CHM allowing attendees to sit and try their skills with ZEUS
April 2002
  • First survival animal surgery for biliary atresia in pig weighing < 5 kg Drs. Langenburg and Klein mentor surgeons in California's animal lab for biliary atresia on 8kg pig using Socrates telecommunication system (CHM to California)
June 2002
  • CHM hosted first robotic training course for surgeons from around the world. Course included a live lecture from surgeon in Cairo, Egypt via video conferencing.
  • Second robot-assisted case at CHM by Dr's. Langenburg and Klein.
July 2002
  • Talks with Frankel CARES, reproductive genetics and neurosurgery begin to discuss fetal surgery to repair Myelomeningocele (a type ofSpinabifida) using robotic assistance.
August 2002
  • Second Robotic Fellow, Colin Knight, joins the Frankel CARES team.
September 2002
  • Alex Cao, engineer, joins the Frankel CARES team
October 2002
  • Third and fourth pediatric robotics cases completed at CHM
  • Upgrades are made to ZEUS at both CHM and lab
  • First animal survival surgery for TEF (tracheal esophageal fistula) defect
  • Research protocol sent to FDA and HIC (Human Investigation Committee) for approval from Frankel CARES group
  • Trial prototype Starion Scissors ( cautery and US)
November 2002
  • Plan for new "state of the art" OR for robot-assisted surgery finalized
  • First trial cases for animal fetal surgery to start
  • First animal survival surgery for TEF (tracheal esophageal fistula) defect
  • FDA submission pending from CHM
  • Completed survival pig TEF surgery
December 2002
  • FDA approved use of ZEUS in pediatrics
  • First robotic Chole at CHM
  • OR 12 opened for use
  • Dr. Joseph Lellijoins Frankel CARES team
  • Trial prototype 3D system from Computer Motion, Inc.
  • Dr. Holcomb, University of Atlanta Children's Hospital, visits CHM and Frankel's CARES team Dec. 2 and 3
  • Dr.'s Vincour and Katz, St. Christopher's/Philadelphia, visit CHM and Frankel's CARES team Dec. 17 and 18

  • Dr. Klein Grand Rounds, DMC, Future of Surgery
  • Dr. Langenburg, Visiting professor at AGH, Robotics
  • 3D Microscope demo in OR 12
  • Dr. McLorie, Urology , starts dry lab training on ZEUS
February 2003
  • First Morgagni Hernia repair utilizing the ZEUS system with coverage from Channel 4
  • First international participation (from Germany) with ZEUS assist on patient with a Morgagni Hernia, utilizing the Socrates system
  • Non survival pyeloplasty begin in Elliman
March 2003
  • IPEG/SAGES -Drs. Lorincz and Knight present at Conference.
  • Dr. Langenburg is invited guest speaker for CMI at Staples Convention Center
  • Survival studies for fetal surgery begin.
April 2003
  • Dr. Kabeer completes ZEUS training
  • Dr. Knight presents at IFMSS on preliminary work using ZEUS for fetal sheep surgery
May 2003
  • Dr. Lelli performs his first ZEUS assisted case
  • Dr. Lelli performs first pyeloroplasty case with ZEUS assistance
  • Dr. Kabeer performs/assists with first ZEUS case
  • Dr. Oldham and group from CHW visit CHM, OR 12 and CRCM prior to purchase of ZEUS
  • Completion of survival fetal sheep surgery
  • Drs. Knight and Lorincz present at Resident Research Day
June 2003
  • Dr. Kabeer completes his Pediatric Fellowship and moves to CA to practice
  • Dr. Knight completes his Fellowship and returns to AGH to finish his residency
  • Dr. Knight has Frankel CARES t-shirts made for team prior to leaving
  • Survival Pig pyeloplasty begins
  • CMI and Intuitive Surgical officially merge
  • New 3D precision optics system arrives to OR 12

  • Frankel CARES team welcome new Robotic Fellow, Dr. Adrien Kant
  • Complete pig survival surgery for pyeloplasty
  • Microscope for robotic microsurgery project arrives at Elliman Lab
  • Dr. Faust begins non-survival neck dissections
  • Human Factors study for microsurgery begins

  • Raman Tumor study begins
  • AESOP returns from Turkey

  • Frankel CARES program annual report presented with Maxine and Stuart Frankel

  • Clinical case – first robotic laparoscopic choledochal cyst excision with Roux-en-Y reconstruction at CHM

  • Dr. Kant starts survival U-clip bowel anastomosis in pigs at Elliman
May 2004
  • Drs. Kant and Knight present robotic surgery research at IPEG conference
  • 2D Ultrasound is loaned to WSU for the start of the 3D Ultrasound project
June 2004
  • Raman Microscope System is installed in the Department of Pathology at CHM to expedite the tissue collection process for the Raman Spectroscopy project
  • Drs. Faust and Kant starts survival thyroidectomies at Elliman
  • Dr. Kant completes survival nerve repair in rats
  • Dr. Kant completes survival U-clip bowel anastomosis in pigs
  • Dr. Kant completes her Robotic Fellowship and continues on at CHM as the Critical Care Fellow
  • Dr. Lanning completes his Pediatric Fellowship and moves to VA to practice
  • Dr. Faust completes robotic training for thyroidectomies
July 2004
  • Meeting with WSU patent committee to discuss patent application for microsugery
  • Dr. Kant performs first ZEUS case
