Mary Ross, R.N., B.S.N. Airway Management Nurse Nurse Ross is an Airway Management Nurse - otherwise known as the "trach" nurse. That means that she spends most of her time helping kids with tracheotomies - a surgically-placed hole in the throat to help make it easier to breathe. It's her job to help kids get the help they need to care for their trachs at home. It's so rewarding to work with the kids and their families. But the work doesn't stop there. Mary trains home health agencies, teachers and schools to give basic and emergency trach care. Mary is a member of SENTAC and Nurses in Advanced Practice - or NAP. She has been a member and one-time chair of The Nursing Council. She earned her AND and BSN at Oakland University and University of Detroit Mercy, and have been in practice for about 15 years. When Mary is not at work, you might find her singing with her sister at a large family gathering, taking off for a long, winding drive in the country somewhere, or catching any kind of music festival - especially jazz, blues or Scottish tunes.
Hedy Zablocki, R.N., B.S.N. Airway Management Nurse Nurse Zablocki is an Airway Management Nurse - otherwise known as the "trach" nurse. That means she helps kids with their tracheotomies - a surgically-placed hole in the throat to help make it easier to breathe. It's her job to help kids get the help they need to care for their trachs at home. Hedy helped set up many of the processes Children's uses to help kids with airway management, and also with the Home Care Tracheotomy Program. She is a representative to OSHA - the Occupational Safety and Health Administration - as well as the medical safety coordinator for the doctor's office. She also teaches pediatric advanced life support - PALS - and has a Maternal/Child Nurse designation by the American Nurses Association. She loves her work so much that in her spare time, she has developed, produced and helped secure funding for several tracheotomy videos and booklets for families who need a little extra help with trach home care and CPR. The videos and booklets are also available through other hospital systems, schools and camps for kids with trachs and airway management issues.
Administrative Manager Kimberly handles operations, personnel and the budget for the Otolaryngology Department and the clinic at Children's Hospital of Michigan. She enjoys the day-to-day challenges posed by running a kids' health care department. While some might find all that administrative "paper work" bland, for Kimberly it's all about supporting the surgeons and nurses deliver the best care possible to their little patients. Ms. Fresh earned degrees in Health Care Administration and Management, and is currently pursuing a masters degree in Health Care Administration. When she's not in the office crunching numbers or sweating over some other aspect of keeping the office going, she's spending time with her son or talking politics!
Social Worker It doesn't seem like there would be much work for a social worker in an ear, nose, throat clinic - but you'd be surprised. Karel helps with discharge planning, home health follow-up for kids who need that extra support, and sometimes help find insurance - anything to help a family find resources to meet their needs. One of the many reasons she loves her work is the wave of relief that crosses a parent's face when a chronically ill child gets a bit of relief - or even better, fully recovers. Karel earned a master's in Social Work in 1979 and started working for Children's Hospital of Michigan. She enjoys the extremely diverse population we serve and find my work not only satisfying to the soul, but intellectually interesting. She loves writing and co-published an article in the Journal of Burn Care and Rehabilitation, which explores a school re-entry program developed at Children's Hospital of Michigan for burned, disfigured children. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling with my family, scrounging for antiques, gardening, cooking and listening to Irish music.
Executive Assistant to Chief I'm the person who helps keep things straight in the Chief's office! I love working at Children's Hospital because it gives me a sense of mission - even though I'm not a physician. I get to hear wonderful stories of kids who overcome health problems and go on to become happy, healthy and confident kids. I can't think of a more rewarding place to work!
